We’re just back from the Magazines Canada MAGNET 2011 conference. The following awesome STATS are applicable to publishers obviously and any business that is in BUSINESS. Most of these stats are courtesy of IPSOS Reid. They are relevant to all of us as marketers of anything. So here they are and here’s what I think they mean:

1. 98% of Canadians are e-mailing!

Emailing is not dead. If you thought the era of e mailing was over – think again. It is the most widely used method of communication in Canada today. What does that mean for you?

You too can afford an interactive product.

MTV's new on line magazine FORA

Check out this very impressive mix of technology and publishing.

MTV’s brand new online magazine FORA, combines a mix of: content that MTV already owns and the addition of some fresh new editorial and photography. You may have already decided that this is big budget and big publisher stuff. I’m sure you are partly right. More than likely they built the technology and yes, they had the budget to shoot, pay models, stylists and writers, but I would argue that you can do this too.

There are many off-the-shelf products like NXT Book technology from our friends at Dawson Communications and interactive PDFs from our partners at E3 Consulting. These products make interactive possible for even the smallest of publishers. You still need a budget, but it doesn’t have to be huge. Interactive books or FLIP BOOKS as we call them, can start as low as $1,000 and the opportunity they give you to create revenue is endless.

So, 3 points to take away from this:

1. It’s never too late to start building your content – you never know how you will be able to re-purpose it (I’ll be talking more about this in future posts).

2. You can afford an interactive model - there are products and services out there to help you.

3. Do get inspired by the “Big Boys” – yes they have bigger budgets than you, but there are creative ways to achieve a similar outcome.

And if you need help…we’re a phone call away.
