Both I (Jennifer) and Norm are actively involved at the organizational level of the hood, I as Vice Chair of our BIA and Norm as a board member on the Art Walk committee.

St. Clair Art Walk is an annual two-day, juried, fine art festival that takes place in the Wychwood Heights / Hillcrest area of Toronto. Now in its seventh year, established and emerging artists are showcased in local businesses, in their studios and at the Artscape Wychwood Barns on Christie Street.

Norm created the new Art Walk identity this year. The new look was designed to mirror that which it is….. an urban, feet on the street event with a “spray paint” template. It’s easily adaptable for years to come and show cases this wicked city event with a bit of edge and a definite cool factor.

Come out and see what it’s all about.

They say it takes a village to raise a child… in this case we launched a magazine. We are proud to have designed and helped to launch Village Living: West Village, a magazine from our hood for our hood.

It isn’t often that you work on a project that directly effects your own neighbourhood.

This complimentary publication truly was a work of love. It features the best our neighbourhood has to offer in the way of eating, drinking and living. When publisher Andrew Fishman came to tell us about this dream magazine he wanted to publish in our hood, we drooled at the chance to be the firm he would choose to work with…and guess what he did. Little did we know the 3/50 rule would come so true in the design world.

“We are devoted to the ‘3/50 Project’, a crusade dedicated to local brick and mortar businesses. If we opt to spend fifty dollars at a rate of three times per month at our local storefronts, a large percentage of this revenue will be streamlined directly back into our community, thus allowing us to maintain, and eventually elevate, the vibrancy of our local marketplace,” says Iris Zimmer, co-publisher Village Living. “Upon moving into the neighbourhood, I couldn’t help but notice that this vibrant and growing community lacked an unbiased, collective voice,” says Andrew Fishman, publisher at Village Living. “I am thrilled to be able to provide a public platform where these talented individuals can finally be heard, and I proudly support each and every one of their wonderfully eclectic offerings.”
Residents and business owners alike are expressing high levels of enthusiasm about the newest addition to the print media circuit.

K9 handled all identity design, magazine art direction strategy and design, web site design and will continue to act as head art directors, strategists and designers for the second phase of the inaugural roll-out, Village Living Magazine is positioned to launch a variation of the publication to Montreal’s Westmount community in May.

I’ve known Brandon James Scott for the majority of my life so of course when I found out his idea for a cartoon was going to ACTUALLY be one I was pretty darn proud of my friend. I still recall sitting next to him in OAC art class as he worked on his thesis project, a painting of Santa Claus with cat eyes… I don’t think the art teacher ever quite got what he was going for, nor did any of the rest of us, but it was hilarious and apparently it was just the start. To celebrate his cartoon (Justin Time) airing for the first time in North America Brandon has written a wonderful 7 part series on taking an idea in the back of his head from college through to an internationally aired cartoon. Its a great insight into the world of animation but also a fascinating peak at the creative process.

So after we ate the first batch of prototypes we set off to work. With a very modest budget we all started to eat er…I mean brand her famous Crisp and Chewy Chocolate Chunk Cookies. In the end we designed a simple lable for this cookie packet. Our talented and newest designer Laura penned this fresh, current winner. It can easily be adapted to other flavours as Leah rolls them out (no pun intended)…and it doesn’t lock her into costly die cut packaging. The result is strong branding that fits her budget.

As the Barns continues to evolve and build its programming and reach, it became evident that all of the events they ran needed to be grounded by an over arching identity for consistency. We simplified what they were working with before and highlighted the identifiable rings on the stack. By showing less detail, they ended up with a stonger presence. Less is more. This logo can be used in tandem with the actual branded event – like BOO! at the Barns. We gave them a full program that works well with all applications. Shown are the full colour, reverse and black and white versions.

Every year for 13 years we have made custom gingerbread cookies for our clients and friends at Christmas time. The cookies are a small thank you from all of us at K9 for making this year so wonderful. For many of those years, yours truly turned our family kitchen at home into a K9 gingerbread factory! And for many of those years I had to double the recipe as our beloved dog Caesar (RIP) would help himself to a few cookies left out for cooling.

Today we enlist local talent and St.Clair Ave West baker LEAH’S to help us with our mission. This year’s cookies are as yummy as ever and wrapped in a custom wooden box (yes the K9 wood theme is back) and lovingly wrapped for our friends to enjoy.

We love Christmas and we love to support local business. Don’t forget to stop by St Clair Ave West if you are ever in town. We are a growing and mighty neighbourhood and we’d love to see you all.

We wish you all the happiest of holiday seasons!
