TORONTO, May 3rd, 2010 – K9 Design’s inaugural Magazine Makeover contest has awarded Nova Scotia-based quarterly East Coast Living magazine a grand prize package that will see the magazine receive a dramatic cover-to-cover re-design.
The Magazine Makeover Contest, presented by K9 Design, was created to celebrate magazine design and offer one Canadian publisher a complete overhaul of their publication. “Publishing is operating in a turbulent time and the entire industry is waiting for the answer on what’s next,” said Norm Lourenco, principle at Toronto-based K9 Design. “If you are competing in a market with an outdated product your chances will be slim to none when it comes down to staying in the game, and we are firm believers that design has a crucial place in a magazine’s lifespan.”
The prize package will include a holistic analysis of the winner’s publication in addition to providing the following services: strategic direction and redesign on new cover and interior layouts from K9 Design, circulation consultation from Circ3, digital publishing from Dawson Communications NXT Book Media, printing services from Ironstone Media, core promotional printed product from Annex Printing, and stock photography from iStockphoto.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with this opportunity to strengthen the East Coast Living magazine brand,” said Sheila Blair-Reid, Publisher at East Coast Living Magazine. “It’s an honour to be working with some of Canada’s leading design, media and print companies and our editorial and design teams look forward to refreshing our magazine’s design, enhancing its overall look and feel, and taking East Coast Living magazine to the next level.”
Entries spanned British Columbia to Nova Scotia with the following industry vets who made up the judging panel: Scott Bullock, principle at Circ3, Circulation Solutions; Brian Stendel, President of Keystone Media; Doug Bennet Publisher, Masthead and Design Edge; Kathy Ullyott Editor-in-Chief Homemakers; Norm Lourenco Creative Director, K9 Design Co.; and Brittany Eccles, Deputy Art Director Flare. All agreed that out of the four finalist publications, East Coast Living was the best example of a book that could catapult to the next level if given the opportunity to make over its brand.
